Explore Austria: Hotel Post and Nearby Cultural Highlights

Hotel Post in Lermoos, Austria is situated in one of the most beautiful spots in the Alps. It offers impressive views of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain peak. The peaceful atmosphere offers a welcome change from everyday life yet there is much to discover in the nearby historic region.

Twelve years ago, I shared my first article about Hotel Post in the Tyrol region of Austria. Since then, we have returned seven more times. My husband and I are not hikers or skiers so you may wonder why we would have returned so often.

I believe small details can transform a short stay into a relaxing and memorable holiday. The Post Hotel has everything to make that possible. The hotel has a cozy atmosphere and genuine charm with wonderfully spacious and comfortable rooms and delicious food.

Did I mention that the spectacular alpine views are breathtaking and can be seen from almost everywhere in the hotel. Whatever we decide to do each day during our stay, the beautiful mountains, flower meadows and forests surround us. There is also something special about waking to the sound of cow bells off in the distance. When you add genuinely warm Austrian hospitality to all that, it is what keeps us returning. Once you’ve arrived, you may not want to leave this lovely hotel.

We love visiting this beautiful and interesting region of Austria in the fall. The weather is pleasantly cool and sunny. Most years, the mountain peaks are dusted with their first snow and trees have turned yellow and orange. It is a wonderful time to enjoy nature at its finest.

We love the countless possibilities for activities and excursions. If you don’t mind heights, you can take the cable car. It goes up to the top of the Zugspitze mountain from the Austrian side. However, the peak is actually in Germany. The Austrian side has a great viewing platform. In good weather you can see four countries: Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

The area boasts a rich culture and the hotel’s central location is very convenient. It allows us to make day trips to both the Tyrol region of Austria and the Bavarian region of Germany. The state capital Innsbruck, with its famous golden roof, historic old town, and fascinating museums is not far. Neuschwanstein Castle, the world-famous castle of King Ludwig II outside of Fussen, is only half an hour away. It is a “must see,” at least from the outside. Ludwig’s Linderhof and Hohenschwangau castles are also nearby.

We enjoyed another short drive. It took us to the beautiful white and gold pilgrimage church of Wies in Germany. We went on another day trip to Garmisch-Partennkirchen. We also visited the storybook villages of Oberammergau and Mittenwald. Mittenwald is wonderful for sitting outside in nice weather. You can enjoy a beer and sausages, or an ice cream sundae at one of the cafes.

After a day exploring nearby towns, it is pleasant to return to the hotel. There is always a refreshing drink, a light lunch and coffee and sweets to be had. My personal favorite is a slice of dark chocolate Sacher torte. Nature serves as the backdrop whether sitting inside or outside on the panoramic terrace in nice weather.

And if that isn’t enough, Hotel Post is one of Austria’s Best Wellness hotels. If you have hiked in the mountains, you can relax in the hotel’s spa. The spa has been awarded 3 lilies and 17 points by the prestigious Relax Guide. The spa has a heated indoor and outdoor panoramic pool and seven different saunas and steam baths. There is also a separate sauna and steam room for families. The spa has several indoor relaxation areas, some with water beds that are perfect for a quick nap. There are also outside lounge chairs where you can enjoy the cool fresh mountain air.

The hotel’s daily rate includes a nice breakfast buffet. It also includes soups and salads, as well as afternoon coffee and cakes in the alpine style restaurant. The rate also includes a multi-course dinner by Chef Thomas Strasser, voted one of Austria’s 100 best Chefs. There is also a six course weekly gala dinner that is absolutely wonderful.

On this visit, the weekly gala dinner was accompanied by a wine event. A sparkling aperitif and appetizers were served at a reception in the hotel’s comfortable seating area centered around a fireplace. Afterwards, Austrian wines from Netzl winery had been selected to match each course of the wonderful candlelight gourmet dinner.

I have to congratulate Chef Strasser, food and beverage manager/sommelier Almin Begic, and the entire kitchen and restaurant team for a wonderful evening. Chef Strasser leads an innovative kitchen team. They add a touch of international flair to dishes rooted in the cuisine of the Alps. The food is artfully presented. The tastes are superb.

We enjoyed the award-winning wines that were served with the meal. Afterwards, I had the opportunity to visit with the vintner Martin Netzl and his lovely daughter. He told me his grandfather started the winery in 1952.

The winery is located east of Vienna and south of the Danube. It is in the small wine-growing region of Carnuntum. Martin told me that some of the wines are matured in oak barrels made from oak from their own forests. His main goal is to produce top quality organic wines with lots of character and individuality.

All too quickly, our three nights at the Post Hotel Lermoos ended. As in years past, we hated to say our goodbyes. In a country with many wonderful hotels, I believe that you will find a stay at the Post Hotel as nice as I do. It has an incredible view, lovely rooms, great food, and caring staff.
