Recovering From A Broken Pelvis

2 min read apples4sell

A broken pelvis takes time to heal and requires lots of patience. Seven months ago, my husband had surgery for a shattered pelvis. His road to recovery has been long but with the help of a physical therapist he is doing remarkably well.

Many of my readers have asked how my husband is doing since he was discharged from the skilled nursing facility. I thought that this would be a good time to do an update on his progress. First, I want to thank you, your kind words have meant a lot to both of us.

In case you are new to my blog, my husband fell and broke his pelvis in four places. After surgery at a trauma hospital, he was moved to a skilled nursing facility for four months. He was not allowed to put any weight on his pelvis for three of those four months. The muscle loss during that time has made regaining strength and mobility challenging. The surgeon has told us that it will probably take up to a year to regain full mobility and strength.

It has now been three months since my husband’s discharge and he is doing well. He goes back to the nursing facility three days a week. He attends therapy as an outpatient to help him regain strength, mobility, and balance. He is making steady progress with his mobility and is determined that he will manage to walk without a walker.

While progress seem to move slowly, one day he can do what he couldn’t the day before. So we are taking things one day at a time and focusing on celebrating each small victory along the way. We know that patience is key to his full and total recovery.

This experience has been a true test of strength for both of us, but we are handling it together. His ability to laugh and stay positive, even on difficult days, is inspiration to myself and our friends.

Once again, thank you for thinking about us.

  3. Unfortunately as we age it takes longer to heal but happy for you both that everything is going well. My hubby had hip issues and part of his therapy was swimming. Mostly women used it so he didn’t mind it at all LOL

  4. I’m pleased to hear he is making progress, even if it’s in baby steps. Keeping positive and having a sense of humour are key. Blessings to both of you. ♥️♥️

  5. Sounds like a painful journey Karen, but seems like progress is being made. My husband has also been ill this year and his recovery is slow going. I wish you the best

  6. What a wonderful read! Being in the throes of similar, which has robbed me of the opportunity of living totally on my own again, I am pretty much aware of what your darling husband is going thru’ ! A step forwards most days, not demanding to much of oneself, as on some days it just does not work – absolutely great > good luck and do let us know of the progress 🙂 !
